Waterman’s Weekend

Waterman’s Weekend

Audi Mission Viejo assisted Audi of America in sponsoring the 21st Annual Waterman’s Weekend which includes the Waterman’s Classic Golf Tournament and the Waterman’s Ball for the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA). SIMA supports the major surf companies behind the industry such as Billabong, Quicksilver, Body Glove, Liquid Tribe, and many more. The SIMA Environmental Fund, for which the event was held, is founded on their devotion to environmental defense.

The event began on July 8, with the Waterman’s Classic Golf Tournament. Sponsors from within the industry, as well as a guest appearance by Audi, setup various attractions and activities at each hole, and around the whole golf course. Each booth provided players items free of charge; drinks, food, and apparel went to the players as they toured the circuit. In fine Audi style, and in the spirit of Audi’s ‘Friendly Competition’ television advertisement, the Audi Race Paddock on Hole 16 pitted golf foursomes against one another in head-to-head racing on the very slot car track used in the commercial. Those who recall this year’s Audi Superbowl commercial would be pleased to see the Audi team dressed in the actual uniforms worn in the “Green Police” spot.

Friday, July 9, was the Waterman’s Ball held at the St.Regis’s neighbor, the Ritz Carlton Resort. The evening kicked off with a VIP sponsored reception which included a speech by Paul Naudé, chairman of SIMA’s Waterman’s Weekend Committee, a member of SIMA’s Senior Advisory Board, and CEO of Billabong USA. Mr. Naudé continued on to introduce and award the honorees of the Waterman’s Weekend – the Waterman of the Year, the Environmentalist of the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award winner. This year’s honorees included Tom Curren, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Al Merrick, respectively. After the VIP cocktail warm-up, guests were invited to the courtyard for a large silent auction and art display whereby bidders could battle for top-notch items by placing their bar-coded stickers on the auction item sheets. Items ranged from $20 to upwards of many thousands. Of course, the auction benefited the SIMA Environmental Fund, and included surf boards, art, signed memorabilia,  vacation packages, food, wine, cooking items, and plenty of surf industry apparel.

At the sound of the bell and the close of the silent auction, everyone was ushered inside to their eloquently decorated tables in the Ritz Carlton main ballroom.  Shortly thereafter began the live auction which included exotic vacations, custom artwork, and the crown jewel of the event, a 2010 Audi A3 TDI Clean Diesel – Winner of the 2010 Green Car of the year award. This TDI came enhanced with matte black sport wheels, a matte black grille, a roof rack, wetsuit, surf board, and snow board. Competition amongst the bidders was intense but ultimately settled at $40,000 which was well above the vehicles MSRP. Likewise, this went to directly benefit the SIMA Environmental Fund.

The event was an overwhelming success, and Audi Mission Viejo looks forward to participating in future years.
