Local Golfers Compete at Audi quattro Cup

Audi Mission Viejo qualifiying tournaments earn four Southern California golfers the chance to compete at a PGA Tour Championship course

MISSION VIEJO, Ca (August 29, 2011) – Two pairs of golfers experienced the ultimate in luxury and sport last weekend, as the winners of Audi Mission Viejo’s two local qualifying tournaments competed in the Audi quattro Cup at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin – with the winners of the US Final earning a spot in the World Final in Hong Kong next month.

Brothers Carl and Steve Vaughn qualified through the Mission Viejo Country Club’s annual member/ guest tournament held in June, while James Axelson and Ken Kaufman repeated as local qualifiers through the El Niguel Country Club in July. The Vaughns, both of Mission Viejo, won the qualifier with a combined score of 45 while Axelson/Kaufman earned their spot with a score of 59. Scoring is based on the Stableford scoring system – rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, as in stroke play, it involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole with the highest score earning the victory.

The experience – from the golf at Whistling Straits (home of last year’s PGA Tour Championship) to the accommodations at the famous American Club in Kohler – earned rave reviews.

The Vaughns at Whistling Straits

“The entire venue, from The American Club to the Whistling Straits golf facility, was top notch and the presence of the Audi team only served to raise the bar even higher,” said Carl Vaughn. “Everything, literally, was first class.

“Saturday started with an amazing breakfast buffet and then on to Whistling Straits.  What a beautiful golf course!  Walking where champions have walked and having a caddie made the experience that much more memorable even though our score was very forgettable!  Saturday night’s awards dinner was held at the Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan and the Audi R8 Spyder parked in the lobby set the tone for the evening.  The cocktail hour was abuzz with everyone recounting their experiences from the day – there were golf tales to be told, stories of soothing massages had at the Kohler Waters Spa and talk of the deals made at the shopping excursion to nearby Cedarburg.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to have participated in such a terrific event and it’s an experience we will never forget!!”

Axelson echoed that sentiment.

“I have been on many golf trips in my life but this ranks as one of the best,” said Axelson. “We had a perfect dinner at the American Club Thursday night, then Friday, Kenny and I played a couple of practice rounds while our wives went to the spa and toured the Kohler Design Center.  The Audi party Friday was awesome, with great food, drinks and a cigar roller! The Golf Tournament Saturday was perfectly run, the course was as good as it gets, the weather was perfect and the Awards presentation was great!”

Whistling Straits, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, has hosted the US PGA Championship and the US Senior Open and in 2012 will host the US Women’s Open. Open, rugged and windswept terrain defines the walking-only, links-style Straits Course sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. A masterpiece in the world of golf created by Pete Dye, the Straits course at Whistling Straits was ranked third in Golf Digest‘s ranking of America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses for 2011/2012.

The Audi quattro Cup has grown from its origins in 1991 as a national tournament organized by German Audi dealers. In 2010, Audi dealers from 52 different countries worldwide organised a total of 760 tournaments and over 87,000 amateur golfers participated, with over one million golfers taking part in Audi quattro Cup tournaments during the last 20 years. The winners of the US Audi quattro Cup will compete at the Audi quattro Cup World Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in China.
